Rehoming Your Mare Responsibly

Support, Resources & Protection for Thoroughbred Broodmares

Why This Page Exists

Too many times, we get the same heartbreaking call:

“I rehomed my mare to someone I thought would give her a forever home. Now she’s in a kill pen. What do I do?”

We drop everything to help when we can—because we believe that no Thoroughbred mare deserves to disappear without someone trying to intervene. But these stories follow a pattern, and that’s why this page exists.

At Mareworthy, we don’t just rescue mares—we try to prevent them from needing rescue in the first place.

This page brings together the resources, tools, and tracking systems we’ve developed over time to:

  • Help you rehome responsibly with solid contracts and ongoing follow-up

  • Make sure the right party is on file with The Jockey Club Registry

  • Offer guidance on humane euthanasia when appropriate

  • Provide access to financial or medical support resources when rehoming is a last resort

  • Help you plan ahead for what happens to your horses if something happens to you

We also offer optional follow-up services, where Mareworthy checks in on the horse’s placement on your behalf (with permission from the new owner). We’ve found that bad actors are far less likely to sign a contract involving a third party—and that layer of accountability often makes all the difference.

Although we can’t rehome every mare who needs it, we provide this consulting service and every one of these resources at no cost. We’re powered by community donations—and we’re deeply grateful for those who pay it forward after we’ve helped.

This page is also a central hub for data collection.

When a mare ends up in a kill pen, we ask people to submit her details through our database form. The information helps us:

  • Track which horses end up in trouble and why

  • Flag bad actors and create a "do not adopt to" list

  • Spot trends by age, sale history, and performance

  • Report findings back to the Thoroughbred industry with real data

  • Build upstream protections and inspire systemic change

Because the truth is: if we can organize better, we can protect better.
And if we protect better, fewer mares will suffer.

Let’s make sure that when a mare’s racing and breeding days are done, the rest of her life is something she—and her past connections—can be proud of.

Make it stand out.

It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.
