We're Watching: Tracking Older Broodmares After Public Sales
Mareworthy Charities tracks older broodmares after they sell at public auction to ensure transparency, celebrate responsible ownership, and prevent mares from disappearing into uncertain situations. When mares can vanish without anyone asking questions, bad outcomes become easier. When people know we're watching—when there's visibility and accountability—better decisions get made.
This isn't about shaming individuals. It's about creating systemic change through transparency. We celebrate responsible sellers who withdraw their older mares from sales, recognize buyers who purchase with retirement plans, and maintain accountability for mares who might otherwise disappear from public record.
What We Track
Currently, we're focused on mares age 18 and older sold at major breeding stock sales. We track:
Current location and ownership (via Jockey Club registry and breeder records)
Foals produced after the sale
Breeding status for subsequent years
Ownership changes and transfers
Retirement outcomes
We hope to expand our tracking to younger at-risk mares (16-17 years old) and additional sales in the future as our capacity grows.
How You Can Help
Transparency and accountability only work when we have complete information.

If You Own, Lease, or Board Any of These Mares:
Please report their status to The Jockey Club Traceability Survey. The Jockey Club Traceability Initiative helps track Thoroughbreds after their racing careers, estimate the current population, and improve industry-wide traceability. Analysis of information submitted through the Initiative allows us to more effectively direct information and resources regarding a horse's transition from racehorse to a second career.

Mares Withdrawn from 2024 November Sale
The Three Withdrawn Mares
Cauy's Humor ✓
Age at 2024 Sale: 18 years old
Status: Withdrawn before sale
Breeder of 2025 Foal: Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings (colt)
2026 Breeding Status: No report
Notes: Stonestreet purchased her at the 2018 Keeneland November sale and has been the registered breeder of all her foals since. This is 7 years of consistent, responsible ownership. Stonestreet decided against selling their 18-year-old mare and kept her in their program instead.
Golden Mystery ✓
Age at 2024 Sale: 18 years old
Status: Withdrawn before sale
Breeder of 2025 Foal: Donald Michael McCormick (filly)
2026 Breeding Status: Bred to Bolt d'Oro
Notes: McCormick purchased her at the 2021 Keeneland November sale for $60,000 and has been the listed breeder since her 2022 foal. Responsible ownership for 4 years. McCormick bought this mare when she was already older, has bred her responsibly, and chose not to sell her at 18.
Miss Canada ✓
Age at 2024 Sale: 18 years old
Status: Withdrawn before sale
Breeder of 2025 Foal: No foal reported
2026 Breeding Status: No report
Notes: Paz purchased her at the 2016 Keeneland November sale for $9,000. Last foal was born in 2021. She's been bred only three times since Paz acquired her 9 years ago. Appears to be winding down her breeding career gracefully rather than being pushed year after year. Owner: Faustino M Paz.
The Nine Mares Who Sold
Bel Air Beauty ✓
Age at 2024 Sale: 20 years old
Sale Price: $30,000
Buyer: Tom Drury (agent)
Breeder of 2025 Foal: Cherry Valley Farm (filly)
2026 Breeding Status: Bred to Silver State, but listed as barren
Notes: All foals prior to sale list W. Bruce Lunsford as breeder—Lunsford has raced Bel Air Beauty as one of his graded stakes winners. This appears to be long-term ownership continuing. Update: Confirmed retired and living with a retirement herd at the farm.
Elusive Surprise ✓
Age at 2024 Sale: 18 years old
Sale Price: $3,000
Buyer: Horse Husband Stables
Breeder of 2025 Foal: Horse Husband Stables (colt - her 13th foal)
2026 Breeding Status: Will be retired to Mareworthy Charities after weaning
Notes: Personal boutique breeding and racing operation. Purchased with clear retirement plan. Required multiple joint injections for stifle arthritis; colt hospitalized twice this year. All costs absorbed by buyers. Lifetime protection for both mare and colt through Foal to Forever program.
Panther Strike ✓
Age at 2024 Sale: 18 years old
Sale Price: $7,000
Buyer: Krista Seltzer (agent)
Breeder of 2025 Foal: Stone Base LLC (filly; Krista Seltzer affiliated with Stone Base LLC)
2026 Breeding Status: Bred to Take Charge Indy
Notes: First time sold at auction. Most recent foals prior to sale have Edward Seltzer and Beverly Seltzer listed as breeder. Appears to be potential family ownership continuing or buy back—mare never truly left the Seltzer family. Another example of retaining long-term ownership, handled through the sales process.
Peach Brew ⚠️
Age at 2024 Sale: 18 years old
Sale Price: $4,000
Buyer: K Bar K Enterprises
Breeder of 2025 Foal: No foal reported
2026 Breeding Status: No report
Notes: Ownership discrepancy concern. Low sale price without reported foal could mean mare has fully left the industry and could be at risk. Buck Pond Farm & Rob Auerbach (her consigner) listed as breeder for all recent foals prior to 2024 sale. K Bar K Enterprises doesn't show in TJC records. Need more information about K Bar K Enterprises and this mare's current status.
Quick Town ✓
Age at 2024 Sale: 18 years old
Sale Price: $7,500
Buyer: Blue Rose Farm
Breeder of 2025 Foal: Blue Rose Farm (filly)
2026 Breeding Status: No report
Notes: Fairly straightforward responsible sale and ownership.
Seeking Ms Shelley ⚠️
Age at 2024 Sale: 18 years old
Sale Price: $17,000
Buyer: KOID Ltd
Breeder of 2025 Foal: Unknown (Equineline shows "=" prefix; not in TJC registry - likely born outside North America)
2026 Breeding Status: No report
Notes: Mare likely overseas - we lose traceability and cannot confirm care or outcomes.
Splendid Solution ⚠️
Age at 2024 Sale: 18 years old
Sale Price: $25,000
Buyer: Ramzi Alghul (address in Libya)
Breeder of 2025 Foal: No foal reported in North American registries or Equineline
2026 Breeding Status: No report
Notes: Likely overseas - we lose traceability and cannot confirm care or outcomes.
Win McCool ✓
Age at 2024 Sale: 21 years old
Sale Price: $20,000
Buyer: Scott Pierce
Breeder of 2025 Foal: No foal reported
2026 Breeding Status: Bred to Gunite
Notes: All foals since 2018 have Hill n Dale & Jared Burdine listed as breeder, suggesting long-term partnership continuity. A trusted farm representative assured me the mare would stay with them through retirement, and foaling records support this commitment to her long-term care.
Windyindy ✓
Age at 2024 Sale: 18 years old
Sale Price: $2,500
Buyer: William Nicks
Breeder of 2025 Foal: Jennifer Irelan (filly)
2026 Breeding Status: No report
Notes: Mare changed hands after sale. Now with Jennifer Irelan who plans to provide a long-term home.
Legend
✓ = Positive outcome (responsible ownership, clear retirement plan, or family continuity)
⚠️ = Concern (ownership discrepancy, lost traceability, or unclear status)
What This Data Shows
The Wins:
3 withdrawn mares: Stonestreet, McCormick, and Paz all chose to withdraw their older mares after cataloguing—this is responsible ownership that deserves celebration
At least 6 of 9 sold mares: Appear to have stayed with or gone to established operations or responsible long-term owners:
Win McCool → long-term partnership with Hill n Dale with commitment to her care through retirement
Bel Air Beauty → stayed with Bruce Lunsford/Cherry Valley Farm and is now retired with a retirement herd
Windyindy → now with Jennifer Irelan who plans to provide a long-term home
Elusive Surprise → Horse Husband Stables with clear retirement plan
Panther Strike → stayed within Seltzer family ownership
Quick Town → Blue Rose Farm (straightforward responsible sale)
The Concerns:
Peach Brew: Ownership discrepancy, low purchase price, and no foal reported despite selling in-foal
Seeking Ms Shelley & Splendid Solution: Both likely overseas, which means we lose traceability and cannot confirm their care or outcomes
The Numbers:
8 of 12 produced reported North American foals (67% success rate for mares 18-21 years old)
33% did not produce reported foals (Win McCool, Splendid Solution, Miss Canada, Peach Brew)
Key Insights:
Responsible sellers exist and should be celebrated: Stonestreet, McCormick, and Paz withdrew their older mares rather than risk uncertain outcomes. The Seltzer family kept Panther Strike within family ownership. This is the model.
Most sales appear to represent continuity, not crisis: Win McCool, Bel Air Beauty, and Panther Strike all appear to have stayed with long-term owners or family, with commitments to their ongoing care.
But the system still allows problematic breeding decisions: Even with responsible ownership, we're breeding senior mares with recent gaps in their foaling records which could indicate great risk of complications.
Transparency gaps remain: Cases like Peach Brew and mares going overseas show we need better industry-wide participation in The Jockey Club Traceability Initiative.

Why This Matters
Our research analyzing over 22,600 sales records from Keeneland's November and January sales (2015-2024) shows that broodmares over 16 face dramatically increased risk. Median prices drop from $25,000 for mares under 16 to just $7,000 for mares over 18. Many older mares end up in uncertain situations or disappear from public record entirely.
By tracking these mares transparently, we can:
Celebrate responsible sellers who withdraw their older mares or implement age cutoffs
Recognize responsible buyers who purchase with clear retirement plans
Identify concerning patterns like repeatedly breeding elderly mares past their productive years
Build accountability so mares don't disappear from public record
Advocate for systemic change including industry-wide age cutoffs and better retirement planning
The goal isn't to shame—it's to create visibility so better decisions get made.
